Preparing your Air Conditioner for Summer – Do-it-yourself Tips

  • Replace the air filter in your furnace. Central air conditioners use the furnace or air handler blower to circulate the cool air throughout your home.
  • Ensure the power switch for the furnace is turned on throughout the cooling season so that the blower can continue to circulate the air conditioners cool air
  • Set the thermostat to cool and replace the batteries if necessary
  • Remove any vent covers and vacuum the dust from the air vents and ducts.
  • If you have an air conditioner cover or if you place a sheet of wood overtop of the outdoor unit to reduce the buildup of debris, remove them.
  • There will be an electrical service disconnect near the outdoor unit. Open it up and ensure the switch or the block is set to on.
